A Burger Joint With Friends

Hamburger

Cheeseburger made with Worcestershire sauce, stuffed American cheese, lettuce, and mayonnaise.

If you’ve never had a plumpalicious burger stuffed with cheese in the middle that clearly oozes out cheesiness with every bite, well—you’re missing out on a good portion of life.

There’s nothing like going to lunch with some friends to a burger joint you’ve never tried before.  I get such joy in trying out new things—especially when food is involved.  I must say, I had a marvelous time, too.  The menu was full of a variety of assortment of very descriptive burgers—that it was almost impossible to decide which one to go with.

Oh, they served other things on the menu too—but they’re known for their burgers so I figured I’d give a burger a whirl.  And, BOY, did I choose a good one!  I was so deeply involved in my burger I couldn’t even talk amongst friends.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, become one with a fantastic burger at a burger joint near you—and preferably with some friends.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  Learn to multitask and acknowledge your friends at the table while at the same time admiring your burger.

A Patty Melt Day

Patty Melt

Made with butter, onions, ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt & pepper, Swiss cheese, and sourdough bread.

A lot of the recipes I make I either see on the Food Network or in one of the food magazines I get each month.  I usually decide what to make based on:

  • What I feel like eating that day
  • How delectable the dish looks on television or in the magazines
  • Observing the whole process involved in making a dish because I don’t like overly complicated recipes that would wear me out

Today was a simple patty melt day.

This turned out to be a pretty good burger, but I must say I think I prefer a different type of cheese other than Swiss for my burgers—like maybe cheddar.  I also missed my ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise toppings.

I didn’t want to turn the burger into something else entirely, so I opted to eat it as is.  And though it was good, all I thought about was cheddar cheese and ketchup during the eating process.

Recipe for—Patty Melts

So, if you have nothing else to do today, try a patty melt the recipe way or spruce it up and make it your way.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  When you’re missing and wanting ketchup and cheddar cheese, just go get the ketchup and cheddar cheese.  Life’s too short not to have the condiments and side items you really want.

Mushroom Burger

Sautéed ‘Shroom Burger made with mushrooms and Swiss cheese with a side of French fries.

Now I’ve had some great burgers in my lifetime, but I have to say I wasn’t impressed at all with my burger here.  It was about as bland as bland could get.

I had to douse this with loads of ketchup just to somewhat enjoy it as it was sliding across my taste buds and going down my tube.  The fries were ‘meh’, too.

Red Robin sign

I’m not so sure about the ‘Gourmet Burger’ part of the sign.  Maybe I just didn’t give this place a decent chance and should probably go back and try several of the other burgers and menu items before I do a review.

Maybe it is an awesome place to go, but I couldn’t tell you that yet from my personal experience.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, give Red Robin a chance and maybe order something else off the menu other than what I did.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  It’s hard to give a place a second chance when the first thing you order off the menu doesn’t even come close to impressing you.

Five Guys Burger Love

Cheeseburger from Five Guys

Double Cheeseburger with grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard with Fries and Fruit Punch.

I think the picture speaks clearly enough for itself, don’t you?  I sauntered into this burger joint because I LUUUVVV me some Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

And I did this, of course, AFTER I drove 30 minutes to the warehouse furniture store we have just for chocolate-covered caramel marshmallows.  Yeah, you heard me!  I didn’t go for the furniture, but FOR THE CHOCOLATE!!  And it was worth the 30-minute ride going and coming.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries

So, if you have nothing else to do today, saunter into a Five Guys burger joint, take a seat, and enjoy your burger and fries—then head to a furniture store afterwards for chocolate (or before depending on your priorities).

Take-Away Life Lesson:  The ‘little’ burgers on the menu are not actually “little” as in small, tiny, or quarter-sized—they are actually single patties.  The burgers without the word ‘little’ in front of them are double patties.  So if you walk in and order a ‘hamburger’ or ‘cheeseburger’, keep in mind you’re ordering a double burger.  The menu just doesn’t make sense if you’re a first-timer reading it.

Meatloaf burger and fries

My own personal shopping cart of fries!  I just LOVE this burger joint!  One fine day I decided to go out for lunch by myself and happened upon this hot spot.  My lunch meal consisted of—a Meatloaf Burger with grilled onions and sweet ketchup on an onion brioche bun with a side of……Fries in a basket with chipotle aioli sauce and sweet ketchup.

What cracked me up was the basket of fries.  How awesome is that?!  My own personal grocery cart of fries.  I mean, it is a basket after all.  It just made eating them so much more fun.  (Unfortunately, the cart wouldn’t fit inside my purse.  But that’s neither here nor there.)

This juicy, moist burger fell apart with the first bite.  My hands were SO messy I required a minimum of 30 napkins—(that’s how you know you’re eatin’ a burger right).  The food was great, but I think my arteries were screaming at me.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, go to your local burger joint and ask for a burger and a basket of fries.  And when they have the nerve to bring the fries out in their standard container look at the server and say “NO, in an actual grocery cart, please.”

Take-Away Life Lesson:  Bring a much bigger purse in case the basket ‘accidentally’ rolls off the table and needs a place to land.

Why Did This Burger Leave Me???

Hardee’s Southwest Patty Melt Thickburger

Sooooooo, I hate when a really good thing comes along just as a teaser only to leave again for a really long time.  I remember the first time I tried this succulent burger.  It was the best thing ever from a fast food drive-thru!  The Hardee’s 1/3 lb Southwest Patty Melt Thickburger.

As I was circling the Hardee’s building making my way to the drive-thru, there it was—a huge poster for the “NEW” burger on ‘promotion’.  It was a combination of the name, picture, and description that sucked me in.  Listen to this—a charbroiled beef patty with sliced jalepeños, grilled onions, pepperjack cheese, and spicy Santa Fe sauce on grilled sourdough bread.  See what I mean?

So I forked over the money and, OMG, the combination of everything just made it so melt-in-your-mouth good!

But what is the purpose of having a ‘promotion’ for a few weeks (8 weeks tops if we’re lucky) just to have it go away even when it’s doing really well?  And I know it was doing really well because I ordered this very burger at the drive-thru every day for each of those weeks it was on ‘promotion’.

So I asked the general manager what was up with the part-time burger.  He said they usually only sell it once a year on ‘promotion’ and that’s it.  WHAT!!  So the best thing on your menu EVER in life is the one thing that only comes around once per year?  Yeah, that makes sense.  I can definitely name some items that deserve to be taken off the menu instead of this one.  You’re SO losing a customer after this is gone, buddy.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, go convince the Hardee’s Food Systems to bring this burger back as a permanent menu fixture.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  Find a way to take control over the Hardee’s Corporate Office to make better management decisions.
