Loving Those Beignets

Beignets

Traditional Beignets hand-rolled, flash fried, and dusted in powdered sugar.

I have to say, I’ve never even heard of a beignet before I came across this place and I certainly didn’t know how to pronounce it (ben-yay).  But once I met the beignet, I was pretty happy we got to know each other.

They’re kind of like donuts with powdered sugar.  But this place also has what they call ‘savory’ beignets, too, with several varieties of goodness on the inside of them depending on which kind you choose.  I just happened to try ‘The Bronx’ beignet and I thought it was pretty good for a savory surprise.

I have to say, I did fall in love with the 7-cheese macaroni.  How do you NOT love something that has 7 different cheeses inside of it?!  I immersed my entire face into it.  It was as if we became one.

But I wasn’t too fond of the bread pudding tho (probably because I’ve grown accustomed to the awesome bread pudding at my local diner).

I Found A New Little Diner!

Breakfast at the diner

Biscuit & Gravy, Pancake with maple syrup and butter, Breakfast Sandwich made with scrambled eggs, ham, and melted cheese served on a croissant with a side of potatoes and fruit.

Oh, my word!!!  I’m in LOVE with this new diner I discovered a few minutes north of me.  A friend of mine turned me on to it a while back, but I just decided to drive out there and try it out for the first time this morning.

Let me tell you—there was a CROWD of peeps out there!  They open at 7:00am but I got there at 9:00am and the place was entirely full with people sitting outside the diner waiting for their names to be called from the list.

I was about 7 names down, but was told it’d only be about a 10-minute wait.  So no worries from me.  We didn’t mind waiting.

The huge portions they give you are utterly amazing.  I loved every minute of it.  I wish they were closer to me, but it was SO worth the trip.

Diner

They close at 2:00pm every day though—which is super early.  Probably a good thing for me or I’d be alternating between both the other diner I frequent and this one every day after work.

Cinnamon Roll

This is the Cinnamon Roll topped with icing that I took home to-go and warmed in the microwave.  This was SO deliciously good.  Big ups to the kitchen for making these bad boys!  Ahh!  It totally hit the spot.  They’re not as big as the ones from my other diner, but they rock nonetheless.

Oh, how I just love little out-of-the-way diners!  So homey.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, search out a new diner in your town that you’ve never tried out before and make yourself right at home.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  Always try a small hometown diner first over a big chain restaurant.  You’ll more than likely get bigger portions of food along with some fabulous home cookin’ in a homey-type atmosphere.

IHOPin' Around

Apparently, I lived at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) for a while, too.  This was almost as bad as the time I moved into the Cracker Barrel on a permanent basis.  Seems like once I get on a roll with a place, I need to try everything on the menu at least once—which requires frequent visits.

I managed to get all my pancakes free, too!  If you’ve ever taken the time to read an IHOP receipt, you’ll see there’s a toll-free number to call within 3 days to take a short survey about your experience there.  At the end of the survey, you’re given a code to write on your receipt and THAT’S IT, people!  FREE PANCAKES!!!

OMG, the things I’ll do for free pancakes or any food for that matter.  It was awesome.  EXCEPT—I found out, you can’t call from the same phone number within a certain time period or it won’t work.  They know you’re the same person calling again and apparently they don’t want you getting another set of free pancakes that quickly again.  Seriously, dude?  Why do they care how many free pancakes I get?  But I set out to beat them at their own game.  Hmmm.

The problem—I needed a code for each receipt.  But because I was going to IHOP daily, I had lashings of receipts and, hence, I was running out of phones to use.  I did not let that deter me though.  What’s a girl to do?

Do you know how many free pancakes that is if only I could find a different phone to use?  Home phone, cell phone, work, neighbor’s, co-workers’, but I realized once I ventured out and found myself inside a local laundromat just to “borrow” the phone, I knew things had gotten out of control.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, stop by a local IHOP every day, work your way down the menu, and check out your receipts to see if the survey promotion is going on.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  Keep a stash of pre-paid cell phones in reserve for situations like this.

I Luuuuvvv A Good Breakfast

Biscuits & Scrambled Eggs

Biscuits & Scrambled Eggs smothered in gravy; fully loaded Hash browns with green onions, bacon, and cheese; Pancakes with whipped butter and maple syrup; and a super large 6″ x 5″ x 2″ Cinnamon Roll loaded with frosting.
(Of course, I can never go to this place without getting a cinnamon roll.)

So, you all know I pretty much dig my local hometown diner because of those cinnamon rolls (among other things), right?  Well, I took myself out for breakfast one fine day and this is what I ended up with at the very same diner.  Who knew?  I just love me some breakfast!   I could eat it anytime 24 hours a day.  And I never worry about having someone to go with because I have no problem eating out by myself.  It’s awesome.

Grilled Cheese, Pancakes, Ham & Egg Biscuit, Hashbrowns

On another beautiful outing, my breakfast consisted of:
Pancakes with whipped butter and maple syrup; a 5-Way Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Swiss, Monterey Jack, Cheddar, Parmesan, and American cheeses on thick-cut egg bread; Ham & Egg Biscuit Sandwich with Cheddar cheese; and loaded Hash browns with bacon, green onions, Swiss & Cheddar cheeses.

And, YES, this was all for me.  I wish people would stop asking me that like this is so abnormal.  What kind of eating are you doing, anyway?  You’re not living and enjoying life too swell if you’re not eatin’ like this!

So, if you have nothing else to do today, go grab a big breakfast by yourself at your local hometown diner and order a minimum of 5 items for yourself, eat, and enjoy.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  Ignore all the people staring at you and your food in disbelief when they expect a 2nd and a 3rd person to join you and then realize no one else is coming.  I do.  Mind your biz.
