Loving Those Beignets

Beignets

Traditional Beignets hand-rolled, flash fried, and dusted in powdered sugar.

I have to say, I’ve never even heard of a beignet before I came across this place and I certainly didn’t know how to pronounce it (ben-yay).  But once I met the beignet, I was pretty happy we got to know each other.

They’re kind of like donuts with powdered sugar.  But this place also has what they call ‘savory’ beignets, too, with several varieties of goodness on the inside of them depending on which kind you choose.  I just happened to try ‘The Bronx’ beignet and I thought it was pretty good for a savory surprise.

I have to say, I did fall in love with the 7-cheese macaroni.  How do you NOT love something that has 7 different cheeses inside of it?!  I immersed my entire face into it.  It was as if we became one.

But I wasn’t too fond of the bread pudding tho (probably because I’ve grown accustomed to the awesome bread pudding at my local diner).

The cornbread pancakes were interesting in that I could taste and feel the cornbread swarming about my mouth.  I’ve never had cornbread in a pancake before.  It was ok, but I think I like the regular ol’ pancakes better.

And if you’d rather not pay for a drink, there’s free water in a help-yourself container with small paper cups nearby.

The name of this tiny place is actually called Beignet, too.  I just happened to discover it at a local farmer’s market—and unless you get to the market pretty early in the morning like I do, there’s going to be a line of folks waiting their turn at this small food spot.

You order and pay for your food at the counter, then go find a seat, twiddle your thumbs a bit, and someone will bring your order out to you at the table—assuming you were lucky to snag one.

They have very limited seating.  There’s two 2-seater tables by the window and one directly across from those.  They also have a Victorian-looking sofa and chairs you can sit on with coffee tables next to them for us commoners to enjoy our meals.  It’s very homey-like.  And should you get lucky enough to snag a seat on the inside of this place, the tables already have plastic utensils inside containers on the tables for your convenience.  But don’t worry, if you can’t manage to find a seat on the inside, there’s usually some seating on the outside of this place.

What I did find interesting is that they couldn’t give me a receipt when I asked for one.  They could only email receipts if you wanted one.  I’ll tell you what—a receipt is neither here nor there as far as I’m concerned if I have to go through all that trouble just to get one.  I’ll pass.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, discover and cozy up to a beignet in your area.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  There’s nothing better than a macaroni with seven variety of cheeses inside of it—unless you manage to find one with eight or more.

  1. Sounds like a terrific place! I would love to have some 7 cheese macaroni and cheese. I can not get my kids to eat homemade or any other kind than Kraft or KFC. Ugh. I have seen a few places do the email a receipt, guess the thing of the future. Ugh again.

    1. It was an awesome 7-cheese dish, Julia. But I definitely think my homemade mac & cheese is always better coming from my own oven. And I hope not too many places start emailing receipts. Geez.

  2. Pasta with cheese is my favorite comfort food. and seven cheeses is wow!!! Wish all the yummy foods in this world had no calories. Sigh!!!
