I Should Be Embarrassed

Cell Phone

It’s a sad, sad day when you’ve had your cell phone for three years and out of the blue your 5-year-old niece picks it up and shows you an easier way to turn your cell phone on and off that you never realized existed.

Well, not technically on and off—but you know how the screen on the phone goes into sleep mode and turns black to save the battery? Β Well, that’s what I’m talking about. Β She showed me how to bring the screen back up and make it go out a much easier way than I’ve been doing the last three years.

I don’t think I’m going to talk anymore about the subject because I’m embarrassed enough as it is.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, hand your high technology devices over to anyone 5-years-old or younger and just sit back and observe.

Take-Away Life Lesson:Β  Save yourself from a difficult life by consulting a group of toddlers on day ONE of acquiring any technical devices—NOT three years after you’ve been using them.

  1. yeah that’s such a true thing. when we were young we never knew anything about these gadgets. but the new generation brains are running at speed which we sometimes still fail to match up. i have my small cousin sisters and brothers of 5 years and less and whenever i sit with them they always amaze me by the things they know. i never knew anything that close that age.. and yeah your condition that time would be embaressing and funny. if i too ahd been at your place i would have the question. REALLY? REALLY i never knew so much about my device? lol

  2. Yup … Multiply the embarrassment by 2 ! That’s what happens when you argue with your 4 yr old and he corrects you. !! And he is actually right πŸ™‚

  3. Thanks for the recent like about UConn Headed to the Sweet 16.
I can relate to this post – glad to hear I’m not the only one with nieces and nephews who have technology skills beyond mine!

  4. Kids are whizzes at this stuff. One 16 year old hacked into the Miami Dade School System and changed all his grades. He outsmarted the entire system. He did not graduate but is making six figures with his skills in private industry.

    1. Omg. Are you kidding me! How does one even DO that? My brain wouldn’t have a clue how to go about doing something like that.

  5. My friends kids do that to me all the time. They picked up my iPad and said, “you can do this”, and sure enough, I can. They come over and get on my iMac and they say, “your not using this?”, and next thing I am. (lol)

    It is humbling. πŸ™‚

      1. hahaaa:))) don’t think about it:))) I even don’t try to play in computer games with children, anyway I will be a looser:)))

  6. Ha ha ha!! Yes, I have a 7 year old grandson (soon 8) that has been teaching me for years and his little sister (my adorable granddaughter, almost 5) is just as clever!

    1. I decided before I even wrote this post that I was NOT going to say which button she showed me because it should have been obvious as day to me—but I never realized that’s what it did. It’s a much better way than the way I was doing it. It’s too embarrassing to talk about. πŸ™‚ I may need to see a psychologist at some point to better deal with this. Lol.

  7. I can so identify with you on this!

It’s all about how you’re coming at it. When I came back from China where I had been teaching on a very limited salary, my Dad gave me an iPhone at the airport. I could NOT figure out how to turn the thing on. I know lots of people have iPhones in China, but I had not been living in that income bracket. I stared at it a while and my six year old brother leaned forward and hit the power button I’d missed because of the protective case. It was massive culture shock. Sat there staring at the weird device for a while. I still forget to just tap the space key twice to get a period and start a new sentence when texting. ^_^

We’re in good company though. My Dad’s been doing cutting edge tech for years, but the same little brother taught him something new about using the home screen of our family computer a while back that had him shaking his head and laughing with embarrassment.
