The Waffle House Experience

Waffle & Hash browns

Waffles & Hash browns

My personal experience at the Waffle House was less than ideal.  It started when I drove up to the place and parked my car.  The few workers that were there were all congregated outside the place just ‘hanging out.’  It definitely wasn’t a staff meeting.

On this particular day, I happened to go straight after work.  The place was pretty empty except for one lone man eating on the far side of the restaurant from where I was seated.

As you may or may not know, the menu is also very limited here—waffles, eggs, hash browns, and maybe a couple other things, but that’s pretty much it.  I placed my order with the girl who escorted me to my table—she also happened to be the one that cooked my food as she smacked on her chewing gum.

As I observed my surroundings and watched her cook my food, I realized anyone could probably just come in off the street and slop their own food around in this “kitchen.”  The place did not look very clean and it was less than appealing to watch the food being made.

After she brought my food to the table, she made herself comfortable at one of the other tables and sat there waiting for the next customer to walk in as she looked around aimlessly chewing her gum and playing on her cell phone.

The food itself was nothing spectacular and could have been made better at home myself had I known what a real treat I was going to be in for at this place.  But at least I didn’t find any bugs in my waffle.  But keep in mind, this was my particular experience at this particular Waffle House.  I’m not saying they’re all going to give the same experience—but there’s no incentive for me to try again anytime soon.

So, if you have nothing else to do today, contemplate how you can make your Waffle House experience a little better than what I had.  Even if you just bring your own apron from home and tell the workers you’ll sling your own hash.

Take-Away Life Lesson:  An experience like this can keep one from wanting to go ever again to any of the Waffle Houses.

My Rule Of Thumb
Well, I Lost My Appetite This Morning

  1. So I never actually went through the door of one of these. Got as far as a parking lot once, but had the kids in the car on a family vacation and once we were in the lot it looked too seedy to try. Which is a bummer as there was a fun write-up not too long ago in Bon Appetit making it sound like the icon I thought it was. Huh. Maybe someday. But I think it’s more about the experience and less about waffle quality. ??

    1. Lol. They all look seedy from the outside to me. The one I went to was seedy on the inside too. You may have better luck than I did, but I’ve no plans to go back.

  2. I had traveled to the east coast on occasion and none of my business contacts ever mentioned, “Let’s go to the WH for breakfast”! But my rule of thumb is, if the cops don’t frequent a place, I don’t eat there – in fear of running into those car thieves you chased.

    1. Lol! Yeah, I forgot about that! I should be more careful in my choice of breakfast places and it my pursuits of car thieves. 😀 Lol.

  3. Sorry to read your Waffle House experience was not enjoyable. I haven’t been to a WH in years, it was on the outskirts of Memphis and was similar to your description!

    1. Not to worry. I just keep trudging right along to something else. 😉 Too bad your experience was similar.
